Learn to create and assign Analysis Properties as you size a wing. Add Failure Modes to test the model against more sophisticated criteria for more accurate sizing.
Review Failure Modes Library
In many cases, Failure Modes will be pre-defined in the Database as part of a Database Template. This represents the HyperX translation of a company or team’s margin policy.
-
Expand the Library node in the Property Tree and double-click on the 'Failure Mode’ node
-
Each listed Failure Mode can be applied to the Analysis Properties created in future steps. Any new Failure Modes that are created will be stored here.
Show Only Upper Skin and Review Setup
Selecting the Upper Skin reveals a Honeycomb Sandwich Design Property and Filtered (Peak Element) Load Property have been assigned. Notice there has not yet been an Analysis Property assigned.
Tip
Double-click on each Property to understand the problem definition.
Create Analysis Property with Ply Strength Failure Mode
-
Create a new Panel Analysis Property.
-
Select the existing “Ply Strength” Failure Mode.
-
Click "Ok" to add the Failure Mode to the new Analysis Property.
-
Double-click on the Ply Strength Failure Mode to review the method selection.
-
Click ‘Apply’ in both windows to save.
Note
Max Strain and Tsai-Hill interaction criteria are selected – Sizing with only these criteria mirrors the capability of FEA-based tools.
Assign Analysis Property to Upper Skin
-
Select the Upper Skin.
-
Click-and-drag the new Analysis Property from the previous step directly onto the Structure.
Run Sizing and Review Results

The following steps expand upon the typical results review in order to provide a better understanding of controlling failure criteria and the corresponding methods documentation.
-
Select the Zone indicated below. Right click > Analysis Results.
-
Review Analysis Watch Window.
-
Right-click on the critical margin and select ‘Criterion Documentation...’ to open the Help Center page corresponding to this criterion.
-
Review the Help Center page documenting the selected method. This is available for all criteria.

Add Failure Modes
The previous Sizing with simple ply-based strength criteria was meant to mirror the capability of FEA-style tools. HyperX offers many more criteria to appropriately size sandwich structures.
-
Open the Honeycomb Sandwich Analysis Property.
-
Add the following existing Failure Modes:
-
Laminate Strength – To Size sandwich laminates compared to OHC and OHT allowables (such as those obtained from test).
-
Panel Buckling – general – To Size for analytical panel buckling solution (without having to run global EV solution in FEA).
-
-
From the Analysis Property form, create a new Sandwich Failure Mode with the default selection. Add this to the Analysis Property.
-
This allows for Sizing of sandwich facesheets and core for sandwich-specific analyses.
