A Failure Mode is a collection of related analysis methods, their state, and their respective factors and settings. They are associated with a specific category of criteria - for example, Metallic Strength is a category, and the corresponding Failure Mode will contain Von-Mises, Max Principal, and the various directional strength methods HyperX supports for isotropic plates.

Failure Modes are stored in the Database Library. They are selected to define Analysis Properties, which are then assigned to Zones/Joints. These are the methods that will be evaluated for each Zone/Joint prescribed during Analysis and Sizing.
The image above shows a Panel Buckling Failure Mode. All failure methods that fall under the Panel Buckling category are available to toggle, and their corresponding Analysis Settings can be defined accordingly.
Note
For each type of Failure Mode, the criteria and settings may vary, but the overall functionality of the form remains the same.

Failure Modes are comprised of failure methods - each of which can be toggled on or off to select the margins of safety to be written.

Failure Modes are Database-level entities and therefore can be shared between Projects in the Database, saved as part of a Database Template, and imported/exported between Databases.

Failure Modes are assigned to Zones and Joints via Analysis Properties

Failure Modes are grouped into the following categories, which correspond to the failure criteria included in the mode:
Creating a new Failure Mode involves selecting a category, setting the states of the encompassed methods within that category, and setting certain Analysis Settings for those methods. This process is initiated either from the Failure Mode Library, from the Analysis Tab of the Ribbon, or directly from the Analysis Property's definition.
Option #1: From the Failure Mode Library

Open the Failure Mode Library by double-clicking the corresponding node in the Library section of the Property Tree.

Select 'Create' from the bottom-left corner of the resulting Library window.

Select the desired category of Failure Mode.

Use the checkboxes in the 'Criteria' block of the Failure Mode window to toggle on/off desired methods. In line, required margins, and toggling this check between a limit and ultimate condition can also be applied.

(Optional) If any Analysis Settings exist for the currently selected method, these options can be filled in as desired in the 'Settings' category fields at the bottom of the form.

Click 'Apply' to save desired changes. A Failure Mode entity with these settings will now exist in the Failure Mode Library for reference by all desired Analysis Properties.
Option #2: From the Ribbon
Each Failure Mode category has a corresponding Ribbon button option. So, to create a Failure Mode from the Ribbon:

From the Analysis tab of the Ribbon, click the 'Create Failure Mode' button corresponding to the desired category.

Option #3: From the Analysis Property Definition
Failure Modes can also be created directly from an open Analysis Property definition.

From the existing Analysis Property, click the 'Create New Failure Mode' option.

Select the desired category of Failure Mode.

Use the check-boxes in the 'Criteria' block of the Failure Mode window to toggle on/off desired methods. In line, required margins, and toggling this check between a limit and ultimate condition can also be applied.

Editing a Failure Mode consists of changing the state, required margin, limit vs. ultimate status, and analysis settings of each individual criterion within that mode. Each of these actions takes place on the individual Failure Mode form, which can be launched either from the Failure Mode Library, the Property Tree, or a referencing Analysis Property Form.
Option #1: From Failure Mode Library

Double-click on the Failure Modes node of the Library section of the Property Tree.

Select the desired Failure Mode to edit from the list and click 'Edit'.

Within the selected Failure Mode, the state of each criterion is edited in its respective line within the 'Criteria' section of the Failure Mode form.

Enabled: 'Checking' this box will turn the in-line criterion 'on,' ensuring that a margin of safety will be written for this criterion when Sizing/Analyzing.

Margin: Use the dialog box to enter a non-zero number in order to implement a Required Margin for the in-line criterion.

Limit/Ultimate: Determines at which cases this criterion should be run - limit cases or ultimate cases. See Load Factors for further understanding of how this comes into play for each Design Load Case.

Option #2: From the Property Tree

In the Property Tree, navigate to the Failure Mode list within an Analysis Property node. Double-click, or Right-click>Edit the Failure Mode desired for editing.

Any Failure Mode can be deleted from the Database using the Failure Mode Library.
Important
A Failure Mode cannot be deleted if it is being referenced by an Analysis Property. In order to delete a Failure Mode, it must be completely dissociated from all Analysis Properties.

Launch the Failure Mode Library by double-clicking on the corresponding node in the Property Tree.

Select all Failure Modes desired to be removed from the Database.

Click 'Delete' at the bottom of the library form to delete all selected modes.
