In this exercise, we will practice setting up and sizing various types of HyperX Joints.
The upper skin will be connected to the spars by fastened, single shear joints. The upper and lower covers will be bonded together using a stepped-lap joint. The preliminary status of this model necessitates sizing with Edge Joints because no discretized connecter or cohesive elements have been modeled.
Create Edge Joints
Edge Joints are used to represent the connections between panels abstracted along panel boundaries, rather than being modeled explicitly. They are common in earlier design stages of fastened connections, shear-dominated fastened joints, and bonded joints.
Create Edge Joints along the upper skin-to-spar connection
Create Edge Joints along the upper skin-to-lower skin connection
Note
The Upper Skin Structure now contains these Edge Joints.
Set Up Spar-Skin Joints for Sizing
Just as with Zones, Joints must have a:

Design Property to define the design space.

Load Property to define the FEA load processing technique.

Analysis Property to define the failure criteria assessed.
Each Property was pre-defined in the Database Template so you can find them in the Property Tree. Double-click on any Property to review its definition.
To assign a Property to a Joint:

Use the Viewport to select the Joint(s).

Drag the desired Property from the Property Tree onto the selected Joint.
Note
The color of the selected Joint will flash to confirm that the Properties were successfully assigned.

Repeat for each Property to fully define the Joint.
Review Spar-Skin Joint Sizing Properties
By double-clicking on a Property in the Property Tree, you will open its definition form where you can review its details. Let's review the Properties we assigned in the last step to understand their impact on Sizing.

Confirm the settings in the Design Property match those in the image above before moving on.
Review Fastened Joints Sizing Results
Open the Legend to begin viewing results.
Note
All of the same Analysis Results available for Zones can be plotted for Joints.
Optional: Select ‘By Joint’ in the plot selection options to only see Joint results.
Use the Legend to navigate through the various data that can be plotted for Bolted Joints. Some results shown below:
Tip
Analyzing the results in the Legend helps to inform the design of higher fidelity models.
Set Up Skin-Skin Joints for Sizing

Think of the adherend material selection as a ‘minimum edgeband thickness’ required for this Joint – this can be applied to a higher fidelity model.
