Use Section Cuts and other HyperX Entities to define bays along a wing. Define stiffness constraints for Failure Modes and Analysis Properties to size a bay to meet EI Gj Stiffness requirements.
Create a Section Cut for Each Bay
-
Select ‘Create Section Cut’ from the Structure tab of the Ribbon.
Define the cut plane origins and amount
-
Use the Node Selector to select a starting point in the middle of Bay 2.
-
Repeat for the End by selecting the node in the middle of Bay 7.
-
Change Spacing dropdown to ‘Count’ and input ‘6’.
Define orientation of cut planes by selecting a horizontal axis
-
Open the Vector Definition form.
-
Select the Global x-axis.
-
Click ‘OK’.
After reviewing potential cuts in the Viewport, click ‘Create’.
Notice there are now 6 cuts – 1 in each bay – along the wing. Each cut can also be accessed in the Section Cuts tab of the Structure Tree.
Create Stiffness Constraint Failure Mode
-
On the Analysis tab of the Ribbon, select ‘Create Stiffness Failure Mode’.
-
Name the Failure Mode.
-
Select only the ‘Stiffness, Membrane’ and ‘Stiffness Bending’ methods.
-
Click ‘Apply’ to save the Failure Mode to the Database.
Create Analysis Properties with Stiffness Constraints
To Size Bay 5 to the prescribed EIhh, all Zones must be assigned Analysis Properties that contain the stiffness requirement Failure Mode created in the last step. This tells HyperX to compare the current stiffness to the required stiffness imposed by the constraint.
For each existing Analysis Property:
-
Copy and re-name the Property.
-
Add the new Stiffness Requirement Failure Mode.
-
Assign the new Property to the corresponding Zones in Bay 5.
Run Sizing on Selected Bay
Review Sizing Results
-
Review Set weight.
-
Plot controlling criteria to see which beams were controlled by the stiffness criteria.
-
Review Section Cut properties to ensure the target stiffness was met.
Set Weight: 17.59lbm
#Zones Controlled by EIhh = 2
Resulting EIhh = 6.007e8
Change Stiffness Distribution Slider
We can understand the difference between the two stiffness optimization extremes by re-running the Sizing with the opposite distribution technique.
