Learn to create and assign Design Properties as you size a wing. Make updates to available materials and use Dimension Overrides to make a more manufacturable design.
Show Only Upper Skin and Review Setup
Selecting the Upper Skin reveals that a Peak Element Load Property and a Sandwich Analysis Property have been assigned. You can double-click on each Property to understand the problem definition. Recall that before we can Size this Structure, we must assign a Design Property as well.
Create a Honeycomb Sandwich Design Property
Sandwiches are more efficient in buckling-driven structures. Let’s try a sandwich design.

Navigate to the Design tab of the Ribbon.

In the ‘Panel Designs’ section, select the ‘Sandwich’ rise-up.

Select ‘Honeycomb Sandwich’ from the resulting menu.
Define the Design Property
On the Design Property form…

Name the Design Property.

Select ‘Laminate’ as the Material System.
-
Select ‘Detailed Sizing’ as the Sizing Mode.

Apply the Laminate Family “LamFam_CollierThinPly_Symmetric” as the Material selection to the top facesheet.
Note
Detailed Sizing = Parametric Sizing Optimization meaning the user is responsible for selecting the Sizing bounds and Material inputs for each object.

Right-click in the Material selection field.

Choose ‘Select Laminate Family’.

Select “LamFam_CollierThinPly_Symmetric”.

Repeat for the bottom face.

Select honeycomb Materials and define Sizing bounds for the core object.

Double-click on the Laminate Family to review. Notice that the sizing bounds have been automatically populated based on the largest and smallest laminate, respectively.
Assign Design Property to the Upper Skin
Three routes for Design Property assignment:

Drag from Tree to Viewport

Select Zones first in the Structure Tree or Viewport.

Click and drag a design in the Property Tree.

Drop onto selected Zones.
-
Zones flash green to confirm assignment.

Drag from Property Tree to Structure Tree

Select Zones first in Structure Tree or Viewport (optional).

Click and drag a design in the Property Tree.

Drop onto a Zone or Structure node in the Structure Tree.

Zones flash green to confirm assignment.

Select Zones and click “Apply to Visible Selection” on the design

Open the Design.
-
Select zones in Tree or Viewport.

Click “Apply to Visible Selection”.

Update Design Property to Only One Core Material
Perhaps you have just found out from your machine shop that they have Kevlar core readily accessible. The sizing should be updated to only allow for that material in the core.

Open existing Design Property.
-
In the Core object: Right-Click > Select Materials.
-
Select only ECK-1/8-2.5 (1.4).
-
Click ‘Apply’.
Apply Gradual Core Height Taper with Dimension Overrides
By default, HyperX chose the weight-optimum core height per Zone – but this is not the most manufacturable solution
Enforcing a core height taper down the wing, as shown below, will result in a more producible result. Within each tapered section, all Zones should inherit the maximum core height.

Select the first section of Zones.

Design > Dimension Overrides > Sizing Overrides.

0.5in for all Zones.
-
Click ‘Apply’ to save changes.
Repeat for remaining two sections. Re-Size to verify results.
Note
The Design Property now indicates that Dimension Overrides exist for assigned Zones.
