A Laminate is a discretely defined stack of lamina, each of which having defined orientation and material. This results in 4 variables to be optimized and tracked: ply material, thickness, angle, and stacking order.

Laminates are assigned to Zones through Design Properties. They are added to the Design Property through material selection options.

Laminates are Database-level entities and therefore can be shared between Projects in the Database, saved as part of a Database Template, and imported/exported between Databases.

Laminates can be part of a Laminate Family, or they can be stand-alone (i.e. Orphan Laminates).
Tip
We always recommend Sizing with a Laminate Family, rather than a series of Orphan Laminates. This will lead to a more producible result.
Manually creating a new Orphan Laminate involves manually defining the material, angle, and stacking sequence of lamina. This process is initiated either from the Laminate Library, the Ribbon, or the Design Property form.
Option #1: From the Laminate Library

Open the Laminate Library by double-clicking the corresponding node in the Library section of the Property Tree.

Select 'Create' from the bottom-left corner of the resulting Library window.

Use the resulting form to define the lamina that make up your new Laminate. Name the Laminate, then utilize the tools on the upper portion of the form to add lamina rows, enforce symmetry, and even push to Excel to edit.
Note
Lamina thickness, Material, and angle can all be edited directly in their corresponding cells.

Click 'Apply' to save the new Laminate to the Database.
Option #2: From the Ribbon

From the either the Material or Composites tab of the Ribbon, click the 'Create a Laminate' button.

Use the resulting form to define the lamina that make up your new Laminate. Name the Laminate, then utilize the tools on the upper portion of the form to add lamina rows, enforce symmetry, and even push to Excel to edit.

Lamina thickness, Material, and angle can all be edited directly in their corresponding cells.

Click 'Apply' to save the new Laminate to the Database.
Option #3: From the Design Property Form
A Laminate can also be created directly from an open Design Property definition.

Right-click in the Material Selection cell and select 'Create Laminate'.

Use the resulting form to define the lamina that make up your new Laminate. Name the laminate, then utilize the tools on the upper portion of the form to add lamina rows, enforce symmetry, and even push to Excel to edit.
Note
Lamina thickness, Material, and angle can all be edited directly in their corresponding cells.

Click 'Apply' to save the new laminate to the Database.

You'll notice, after closing the Laminate editor, that your new Laminate has now been automatically assigned to the Design Property. This is the main benefit of using this creation mechanism.
An existing laminate is edited when lamina are added, the sequential line-up of lamina is altered, or individual lamina properties (thickness, material, and angle) are changed. All of these operations can be done either directly in HyperX from the Laminate Form (or Stiffener Laminate Form- as is relevant) or in Excel spreadsheet (and reimported).
Option #1: Edit From Laminate Form

Launch the Laminate Library by double clicking on the 'Laminates' node in the Library of the Property Tree.

Select the laminate desired to edit and click 'Edit'.

In the resulting Laminate Form, edit the lamina as desired.
A few guidelines for editing:

Use the 'add row' toggle to add lamina.
-
Right-click in the Material field to select/change the lamina Material.

Manually enter angle values (non-traditional angles are also accepted).

General cut/copy/paste functionality similar to Microsoft products.

Click 'Apply' to save any changes made under the same Laminate name or click 'Save As...' to save the edited version as a new Laminate.
Note
If the edited Laminate is read-only, you will be forced to save changes as a new Laminate.
Option #2: Edit In Excel

Launch the Laminate Library by double clicking on the 'Laminates' node in the Library of the Property Tree.

Select the Laminate desired to edit and click 'Edit'.

From the resulting Laminate form, the Laminate can be exported to Excel by clicking 'Edit in Excel.'

Edit Laminate by editing the corresponding cells in the resulting spreadsheet:

When finished making edits, click 'save' on the Excel file. Then, proceed back to HyperX and click 'Read from Excel' from the Laminate form.
Note
All changes made in the spreadsheet are now shown in the Laminate Family form.

Click 'Apply' to save any changes made under the same Laminate name. Or, click 'Save As...' to save the edited version as a new Laminate.
Note
If the edited Laminate is read-only, you will be forced to save changes as a new Laminate.
Any Laminate that has been created in Excel can be imported into HyperX using the Laminate Library controls.

Ensure that any Laminates desired for import mirror the format shown in the example below. If importing multiple Laminates, make sure there is a blank row in between them.

In HyperX, open the Laminate Library by double clicking the corresponding node on the Library section of the Property Tree.

Select 'Import' from the resulting Laminate Library form.

Use the file browser to navigate to the Excel sheet containing the desired Laminates.

Select all desired Laminates on the Import form and click 'Import'.
Laminate definitions can be exported to Excel in order to facilitate collaboration between engineers or the various other software products used by engineers.

Launch the Laminate Library by double clicking on the 'Laminates' node in the Library of the Property Tree.

In the resulting Laminate Library, select all desired Laminates and click 'Export'.

Use the file browser to name Excel file and save it in the desired location.
Any Laminate definition can be deleted from the Laminate Library.
Important
A Laminate cannot be deleted if it is being referenced by a Design Property. In order to delete a Laminate, it must be completely dissociated from all Design Properties.

Launch the Laminate Library by double clicking on the 'Laminates' node in the Library of the Property Tree.

Select all Laminates desired to remove.

Click 'Delete' in the bottom of the Library form to delete selected Laminates.
